Pat Cummins Set to Play a Major Role in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on November 21 in Western Australia.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about his chances of being involved.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and there are permutations around that, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he will feature a major part. Hopefully from the opening match. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the series.

The selector indicated that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the first Test as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the starting games regardless. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for another day, we opted to take a cautious route."
